About Mana

A family business, and the reason it exists.

Mana Health and Wellness is a family-owned outpatient behavioral health clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. The family is Native Hawaiian, the work started on Oahu, and the reason we do it here is personal.

Where this began.

Mana Health and Wellness is a family owned and operated business built on the fundamental strengths of family.

We are a Native Hawaiian family. The company began on the island of Oahu in 2001 and grew into one of the leading mental-health agencies there. Our late founder, David R. Berggren, was himself in recovery, with eighteen years of sobriety.

Most of that work was with people who had been separated from their families by serious mental illness — helping them move out of institutional settings and back into ordinary life, with the ordinary things that make a life: a room, a routine, people who know your name.

The move to Arizona was slow. It began when a family member graduated from Arizona State University, and for years we kept the business running in Hawaii for clients who had been part of our lives for two decades. We landed first in Queen Creek, met people working in health care here, and eventually opened in Phoenix.

Our tribute to Jonny

Jonny was family. His trouble started young, and it took him into the legal system in Hawaii. During covid he transferred his probation to Arizona and came to live with his aunt, uncle and cousins. Here he got sober, found work, and became an active part of his community. For the first time in his life, he felt he belonged.

What he never reached were the reasons underneath. He did not address the root causes of his drug use, and he declined the therapy that might have helped him understand why he used and how to stay away from it. In May 2022, at twenty-six, he died in his sleep from drug intoxication.

Mana exists to close that gap. It is why our group curriculum starts with the question of why rather than the substance, and it is why we treat housing, transport and work as part of care rather than someone else’s problem.

What we set out to do

Mana is a culturally motivated recovery program committed to assisting adults in recovery, to repair the wreckage of their pasts, and to be a part of family and community by building a foundation of impulse control, sobriety, health and wellness, family restoration, education, and job readiness skills.

Family restoration

Addiction and serious mental illness pull people away from the people who love them, and that separation is often the hardest part to undo. Repairing those relationships is treated here as part of recovery rather than something that happens on its own afterward — because a family is what most people are trying to get back to.

“Imagine a circle, the individual needing care standing inside of the circle, and people completely surrounding this person, locked hand in hand. This is us, our guiding principles, and the basis for our success.”

How that shows up

What we carried over from the first agency.

Twenty years of work with people coming out of institutions teaches you which parts of care actually decide whether someone stays well. Very few of them happen in the therapy room. Our guiding principle goes back to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs — we identify where someone actually is, look at the environment they are in, and build the plan from there.

Safety & stability

Support for building a steadier foundation and addressing immediate practical needs.

Understanding

Space to examine the experiences, patterns, and mental-health concerns connected to substance use.

Connection

Opportunities to strengthen healthy relationships, peer support, and a sense of belonging.

Growth

Practical resources and ongoing care that may support greater independence and purpose.

Our space

The rooms you would actually be in.

Not a stock photograph of a clinic. This is the building on Black Canyon Highway — the lobby, the hallway, the rooms with names on the doors. Knowing what a place looks like before walking into it is worth something.

The people behind Mana.

Mana is staffed by a licensed clinician, therapists, behavioral health technicians, certified peer support specialists, an intake coordinator, case managers, and business development — clinical care and practical support inside one team, working from the same plan for the same person.

We have chosen not to publish staff names or photographs. Who you actually work with depends on what you need, and you will meet them in a room rather than on a webpage. If it matters to you who you will be seeing, ask on the phone and we will tell you.
