Clinical care

One-on-One Therapy

Individual therapy and psychotherapy — regular sessions with the same clinician, someone who knows your history and does not need it re-explained each time.

One room, one person, and continuity.

Individual therapy is the part of care where you do not have to manage how it sounds. There is one other person in the room, they are there for you, and what gets said is confidential.

The continuity matters as much as the hour. Seeing the same clinician means the work compounds — you pick up where you left off rather than briefing someone new.

For some people individual sessions are the whole of their care. For others they run alongside group work or the Intensive Outpatient Program, and the two are planned together rather than booked separately.

This is where psychotherapy happens too. Some difficulties respond to a short, focused piece of work; others have been shaping how someone thinks and relates for years and need more time than that. Both take place in the same room with the same clinician — what changes is the depth and the length of the work, not the service you book.

Who this may help

  • People who want to work on something privately first
  • Adults dealing with a specific event, loss or decision
  • People who find groups difficult to start with
  • People already in IOP or group who want individual time as well
  • Adults living with long-standing depression, anxiety, grief or the effects of trauma

What we do not do here

This is scheduled outpatient care, not crisis response. If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or call or text 988 — those lines are staffed around the clock and Mana is not.

What to expect

The first few sessions.

Step 1

The first session

Mostly listening. The clinician asks about what brought you in, your history and what you want to be different.

Step 2

A plan you agree to

You and the clinician decide what the work is going to focus on. It can change later — it usually does.

Step 3

A regular slot

Sessions settle into a rhythm. Consistency is most of what makes therapy work.

Session length and number

Both are individualized. How long a session runs and how many you have are set by clinical need and medical necessity rather than a fixed package, and they are reviewed with you as the work goes on.

The longer arc

For the patterns that have been running a long time.

Psychotherapy is the longer version of this work: understanding where something came from, noticing it while it is happening, and gradually doing something else instead. It is slower than skills coaching and it goes further.

People often arrive here after addressing the immediate thing — the drinking, the crisis, the job — and finding that the reason underneath is still there. That is a normal place to arrive, not a setback. It is also the thinking behind Lokahi, which asks the same question of the group work.

Most of it is the ordinary middle: showing up, noticing patterns, trying something different, reviewing. Early sessions are about the whole picture rather than the presenting problem, and you and your clinician name what the work is for, so it is possible to notice progress.

Honest about pace

This kind of work takes time and it is not always comfortable. We will not tell you how many sessions it takes or promise a particular result, because neither of those is knowable in advance.

Paying for it

We accept AHCCCS, including the American Indian Health Program (AIHP) and Banner University Family Care. We also accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Curative and Cigna. Private pay is accepted and a sliding scale is available. Insurance and payment →

Common questions

About individual therapy.

All questions →

It is individualized. Session length and how many sessions you have are set by clinical need and medical necessity rather than a standard package.

Yes. Individual therapy and psychotherapy happen in the same room with the same clinician — the difference is how deep and how long the work goes, not a separate service to ask for. Tell us what is going on and it will be set up accordingly.

Continuity is the point of individual therapy, and we schedule for it.

Yes, within the limits every clinician works under — those limits are explained to you at the start, in plain language, before you agree to anything.

Yes. Many people do both, and the two are planned as one course of care.
