Clinical care

Intensive Outpatient Program

A structured schedule of group and individual sessions inside Mana’s class day — Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM — while you keep living at home and keeping up with work, school or family.

More structure than weekly therapy, without leaving your life behind.

An Intensive Outpatient Program sits between seeing a therapist once a week and staying somewhere overnight. You come to the clinic on a set schedule, do most of the work in groups with people going through similar things, and meet individually with a clinician alongside it.

The point of the structure is repetition. Once a week is often not enough to change a pattern that has been running for years. Several sessions a week gives the work somewhere to build.

IOP at Mana is coordinated with everything else we offer. If medication needs reviewing, a prescriber is part of the picture. If getting here is the problem, transportation and case management are part of the plan rather than a separate errand.

Who this may help

  • Adults who need more support than one session a week provides
  • People stepping down from a higher level of care elsewhere
  • People whose mental health or substance use is affecting work, study or relationships
  • People who want structure but need to stay at home
  • People who have tried weekly therapy and found it did not hold

Who it is for

Adults 18 and older. Everyone starts with a pre-screen assessment, and if IOP here is not the right fit, we help you find placement in a program better suited to what you need rather than simply turning you away.

What IOP is not

Mana does not provide detox, inpatient care, or 24-hour clinical supervision. If you need those, call us anyway and we will tell you where to start instead. In an emergency, call 911 or call or text 988.

Paying for it

We accept AHCCCS, including the American Indian Health Program (AIHP) and Banner University Family Care. We also accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Curative and Cigna. Private pay is accepted and a sliding scale is available. Contact us to confirm your specific plan is covered. Insurance and payment →

What to expect

How starting usually works.

Step 1

You call

You talk to someone about what is going on. No forms, no assessment on the phone — just whether this is the right kind of help.

Step 2

An appointment

You come in and meet a clinician who asks about your history, your goals and what has already been tried.

Step 3

A schedule

If IOP fits, you and the clinician agree on a schedule and what the first few weeks will focus on.

Step 4

Regular review

What you are doing gets revisited as things change. Nobody stays in a program that has stopped being useful.

The schedule

IOP runs inside Mana’s class day: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. You attend a minimum of 15 hours a week, and flexible schedules are available within those hours.

How long you stay is individualized. Completion depends on the work rather than a fixed number of weeks, and it is reviewed with you as you go.

No waiting list

From your first call to your first appointment is typically less than 24 hours. If that ever changes, we will tell you on the phone rather than leave you waiting.

Tools for life, skills for growth

What the sessions actually cover.

The program works through a defined set of subjects rather than open-ended discussion. Alongside them, enrichment classes are offered from time to time — not therapy, and not on a fixed schedule.

Program focus

  • Emotional awareness
  • Relationship dynamics
  • Communication skills
  • Respectful communication
  • Assertive training
  • Boundary setting

Also part of the program

  • Individual and group counseling
  • 12-step progression sessions
  • Skill training classes

Occasional classes and experiences

Offered from time to time alongside clinical care. These are occasional enrichment rather than a fixed weekly timetable, so what is running varies — ask what is on at the moment.

Yoga and meditation

Build mindfulness, reduce stress, and restore inner balance.

Arts and crafts

Express and explore through creative work.

Building community through service

Give back, connect, and find purpose through meaningful service.

Part of the approach

The 12 steps, and what we mean by a higher power.

Twelve-step progression sessions are part of the week here, and taking part in them is not required. We would rather say that plainly than let anyone find out after they have started.

The steps involve the idea of a higher power. At Mana, what that means is whatever you decide it means — for some people it is a faith they already hold, for others it is the group itself, the people who love them, the ocean, or simply something larger than the version of themselves that was using. We do not define it for you and we do not preach. People of every faith and of none do this work here.

What we do encourage, case by case, is that you stay engaged in your own recovery outside of the clinic — in whatever way actually works for you. For some people that is a twelve-step group. For others it is something else entirely, and that is a good answer too.

“At Mana Health and Wellness, we believe in the power of healing, spirituality, and community. Together, we create a path to lasting recovery and a life filled with purpose.”

Common questions

About the program.

All questions →

That is what an outpatient program is designed for — you live at home and keep your commitments. IOP runs inside the class day, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, at a minimum of 15 hours a week, and flexible schedules are available within those hours. That is separate from our office hours, which are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

There is no fixed length. Completion is individualized and decided with your clinician as the work goes on, which is why we do not publish a number of weeks.

No. You can call us directly. A referral from a provider or case manager is welcome but not required.

Call and say so. Mana does not provide detox or 24-hour care, but we would rather point you somewhere appropriate than have you wait.

Ask whether IOP is the right level.

You do not need a diagnosis or a referral to ask. A short phone call is a normal way to find out whether this fits.
