For your care and success!
Mana Health and Wellness, Inc
We are a Native Hawaiian family who owned and operated a company that began on the island of Oahu in 2001. Our company grew to be one of the leading mental health agencies on Oahu. Our late founder David R Berggren was a recovering alcohol addict. While he had 18 years of sobriety, his death was directly linked to his unhealthy lifestyle as an addict.
We primarily served the severely mentally ill population, who were estranged from their families, due to their mental illness. We provided services to help transition our clients from institutional settings to independent living, which may or may not have included reintegration into their families, and their community.
Collectively we have expertise in the fields of business management, real estate, behavioral health psychology, sociology, substance abuse housing management, community organization, cooking construction and carpentry. We use the aforementioned skills to help better treat each of our clients, as individuals with individual needs, because our fundamental belief is that we must treat the complete person.
What Brought Us Here:
Our migration to Arizona began three years ago when a family member graduated from Arizona Sate University. It was a slow move, as we continued business in Hawaii serving clients that were part of our lives and business for 20 plus years. Eventually life brought us to Queen Creek Arizona where we met people in the health care industry. Thus began the journey of providing services designed to "reduce and/or eliminate functional disabilities and social disadvantages, where members live, learn, work, and socialize."
Why are we unique?
We strive to provide wrap around services to all individuals served by us. Our guiding principles goes back to Abraham Maslow's hierarchy, from "Survive to Thrive." We begin our services by identifying the level the individual is at, what the individual's current environment is, and build a plan of care around that level. Listed below is the basis of our plan of care.
What are the 5 levels of Maslow's heirarchy?
From Survive to Thrive: Maslow's 5 Levels of Human Need
Physiological Needs. Food, water, clothing, sleep, and shelter are the bare necessities for anyone's survival.
Safety and Security. Once a person's basic needs are satisfied, the want for order and predictability sets in.
Love and Belonging.
Esteem.
Self-Actualization.
Here is our WHY:
Our Tribute to Jonny
One of our family members was a substance abuser and ended up in the legal system in Hawaii. His trouble started with a dysfunctional immediate family, an absent and an abusive mother, in an area that was socially and economically deprived. He was 26 years old and started using drugs at the age of 12. During covid, he was able to transfer his probation to Arizona where he lived with his Aunt, Uncle and cousins. Here he learned to live a life of sobriety, was employed and was an active part of his community. For the first time in his life, he felt a sense of belonging. His basic needs were met, as he traveled up Maslow's hierarchy of needs. He began to learn to love himself and show love to others. Although he was experiencing a life of recovery, he did not address the root causes of his drug use and took his sobriety for granted. He did not fully participate in self care and refused therapy to help him understand why he used drugs and how to avoid triggers and stay sober. Because of this, in May 2022 he lost his battle and passed away in his sleep from drug intoxication. We spend so many years with helping him to fight this battle, yet the hold of the life off drugs was too strong for him. Our family was devastated. This was the first young and senseless death for our family and truly rocked our family to our core. Out of this tragedy we have emerged with a desire and plan to help others struggling with the grips of addiction.
While our "Why" is focused on drug addiction, it goes back to Jonny's basic needs not being met from a very young age. We believe that if these needs had been met, at a young age, perhaps Jonny would have taken a different path.
Imagine a circle, the individual needing care standing inside of the circle, and people completely surrounding this person, locked hand in hand. This is us, our guiding principles, and the basis for our success. This is our plan.
